CLD at Albany
The
Center for Legislative Development
(CLD)
of the University at Albany is the primary institution in the United
States offering academic and applied studies in the administration of
legislative organizations and in legislative research and information
technology. For over three decades, the center has demonstrated particular
effectiveness in implementing training and technical assistance programs aimed
at strengthening the capacity of governmental institutions-particularly
legislatures-to support democratic development.
The Center's programs are carried out through the University at Albany's Nelson
A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy. Faculty and staff
associated with the Center include specialists in public administration, public
policy, economics, law, decision-making, political science, and systems and
information sciences. Through its location within Rockefeller College, the
Center offers master's
(MPA) and doctoral
(PhD) degrees in public administration
with concentrations in legislative administration, programs that are unique in
the world. Non-degree legislative institute programs are offered in both the
U.S. and abroad.
Training, technical assistance, publications, research,
and university linkages has been provided in the Middle East since 1971, and projects
have been completed in Cyprus, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Tunisia, Yemen, and in
Lebanon where it began work in 1993 under a USAID cooperative agreement.
The Center has consulted with and studied more than fifty legislatures around the
world, and successful projects have been implemented in Africa, Asia, the
Caribbean, Europe, and Latin America, as well as in the Middle East.
