Information and Communication
Website
The LPs ability to reach out to the
community has been significantly enhanced by the Parliament website,
www.lp.gov.lb, initially created by SUNY/CLD in the summer of
1997. Recently redesigned, the website contains Parliament rules and by-laws,
recent activities, proposals for amendments, speeches, curricula vita of MPs,
as well as information about diplomatic activities. It was the one of the first
parliamentary websites in the region and has given the LP a modern tool to
increase citizen awareness of legislative work and enhance communication
between citizens and government.
Media and Communication System
A Media and Communication System, organized and installed in Parliament in
November of 2003, provides MPs with access to timely, relevant information from
both internal and external sources that can be utilized in decision-making. At
the same time, media representatives can receive information via a system
installed in a salon, enabling citizens to ultimately be better informed about
the work of Parliament.
Electronic Sound and Voting System
Prior to assistance, the voting and vote-recoding processes of Parliament
failed to incorporate a mechanism to publicize representative voting. Working
closely with Parliament to render its decisions more open to the public, the
Center designed and installed the Electronic Voting and Sound System and
provided training for several parliamentary employees in the use of the system.
Voting results can now be displayed on a wall in a visible location,
potentially increasing public awareness of the legislative and voting
processes.
